Road blindness due to low angle sun is hazardous. Here's how to avoid it.

Winter is a challenging time for drivers because of the variable light conditions, and especially the glare from the low angle sun.

One moment the sun is out and then there's a shower and the light level drops considerably. Then the sun suddenly reappears and sunlight is reflected from the wet road surface.

The glare is so intense that you experience temporary road blindness and can't see a thing - a serious safety hazard.

Unfortunately these conditions are most difficult at times when many people are on the road, commuting to and from work, or picking up the children from school, for example.

If you wear glasses, the safest measure that you can take to protect yourself from sudden glare, is to wear quality polarised flip up sunglasses. The polarisation will deflect and diffuse the reflected glare so that you can continue to drive safely and comfortably.

If the sun goes in suddenly, or if you enter a dark stretch of road, such as an underpass, then you can instantly flick up the clip on lenses so that your lenses are no longer shaded.

Which flip up sunglasses are best for winter driving?

It is important to be aware that not all polarised lenses are equal. Cheap clip on sunglasses may provide a poor standard of polarisation, so the lens actually blocks far less glare than you expect.

Always buy clip on sunglasses that are described as "optical quality" which means that the polarised horizontal axis is never compromised for maximum visual comfort.

Looking through optical quality polarised lenses will significantly increase your driving comfort because the glare reduction is much more effective.
